Kobus Hatting most probably South Africa best sculptor ever, has been commissioned to do the Nelson Mandela Statues in South Africa. To date the statue of Mandela on Naval Hill, Bloemfontein, South Africa, including the ones in foreign lands, remains the largest one made in honour of this world icon and stands at 8m in height. It was unveiled on 7 December 2012.

Nelson Mandela – The World’s first public bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, has been officially unveiled March 31, 2014 by Mandela’s granddaughter, Ndileka Mandela, a 6 bronze meter Statue overlooking Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg, which has made it to the cover of TIME magazine and transformed the financial heart of South Africa, Sandton Square, into Nelson Mandela Square.

Hector Peterson – Life size statue at the main entrance of the Maponya Mall, Soweto of which a bronze replica of the statue was given to former President Nelson Mandela by Dan Olofsson and his wife Christin on June13, 2006 to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the Soweto Uprising.

At the venue for the official opening ceremony of the Maponya Mall Soweto, it was pack with dignitaries including Nelson Mandela, Johannesburg executive mayor Amos Masondo, Nelson Mandela Foudation trustees Dr Nthato Motlana, Gauten MEC Khbisi Mosunkutu and, the owner of the mall, Richard Maponya.

Biography

Kobus was born on July 5th 1943 in Pretoria South Africa, and did his basic commercial art training at the Pretoria Technician until December 1965, after which he had intensive practical art training under Prof Racotti (Italy).

He began his art career in 1968, and has established himself firmly as both renowned sculptor and successful businessman. After serving two years in the South African Defence Force, he monopolized on the design and manufacture of badges, crests and statues for both the Defence force and South African Police.

He was promoted to Managing Director of Proferro in 1969 and took over the Company after two years. Since then he has created artworks and trophies for various companies, stud breeder’s societies, industries and much more. In September 1999 he received an ATKV Art nomination.

Under commission Distell in Stellenbosch, artworks and copies were created of the Amarula elephant and distributed throughout South Africa and to 52 countries worldwide, including Russia.

Jacob Maponyane joined Kobus’s team in 1976. Jacob had the background of a painter. Kobus took him in hand personally train him in the finer details of the business. Jacob progressed over the years until he was able to lead the production team.

The highlights of Kobus’ career included the designing and modelling of numerous local and overseas monuments. Over the years, Kobus was commissioned to do various sculptures of some prominent personalities such as:
